This is a most welcome anthology, offering a gateway into the major orchestral works of Rimsky-Korsakov. Some of the greatest conductors take turns at the helm of the Philharmonia Orchestra. The remastered edition brings consistency to the sound quality of these recordings, made over a span of seven years, resulting in a cohesive listening experience.

Where Mussorgsky and Tchaikovsky urge us to understand, Rimsky-Korsakov simply invites us to see. Human drama is nearly absent from his work. He never seeks to probe the deep substance of the Russian soul—its contradictions and abysses. From Pushkin, he draws neither Boris Godunov nor Eugene Onegin, but only the world of fairy tales, magic, and legend, where characters are often symbols or puppets.

In this music, the orchestra sometimes becomes a spectacle in itself: the refined use of instrumental timbres and the inventive combinations capable of expressing the subtlest nuances of color conjure enchantments, spells, the elements, and the forces of nature with an almost physical presence.
