Beethoven: Missa Solemnis, Op. 123
Otto Klemperer (2025 Remastered, London 1965)
1 disc(s) - 11 track(s)
Total length: 01:19:27
It is an immense, immortal masterpiece that reaches the heights of what a human mind can conceive. If we had to present to extraterrestrials the finest achievement of our civilization, the Missa Solemnis could, by itself, represent our accomplishment in the field of musical science. The spiritual force that animates it, in which Beethoven’s transcendent faith unfolds, is above all directed toward humanity.
The Missa Solemnis can be described as a letter addressed to humankind, as shown by the notes Beethoven scattered in the margins of the original manuscript. Next to the Kyrie, we read: “From the heart — may it return to the heart!” At the beginning of the Credo, he writes: “God above all. God has never abandoned me.” After completing his Mass, he would often refer to it as “his most accomplished work.”
Otto Klemperer unifies the entirety of the work, resulting in a compact and grandiose block. The fugal passages of the Credo (in gloria Dei Patris), of the Gloria, and the instrumental scherzo of the Agnus Dei burst forth triumphantly, casting strength and rigor across the entire score. The tempos are broad; the recording favors the choirs, admirably shaped by Wilhelm Pitz, and the instrumental details emerge with sufficient clarity. The vocal quartet, featuring a first-rate cast, combines lightness with roughness.
The remastered edition brings more openness to the sonic image without sacrificing depth, which is in fact enhanced. The result is a striking impact of the choral parts and orchestral mass, filling the entire stereo field for an almost mystical experience.
