The Hungarian Dances by Antal Doráti are undoubtedly the most "Hungarian" dances in temperament that we have ever heard. There are several reasons for this. First and foremost, Antal Doráti himself is of Hungarian origin, so it goes without saying that his culture is more than familiar to him. This is evident in his interpretation, which possesses an irresistible momentum, character, and vigor.

He introduces the cimbalom, a struck string instrument belonging to the hammered dulcimer family and very popular in Hungary. Furthermore, the entire string section sings and dances as one while retaining all its flexibility, reminiscent of the Gypsy-Hungarian musical culture and the virtuosity of their violinists.

 The dances that inspired Brahms are czardas, couple dances. The czardas alternate between two parts: slow, in minor mode, and very fast, agitated, and in major mode. The freshness, vitality, and exuberance of Brahms's Hungarian dances ensure their immediate success in all concerts, but fortunately for us, such a masterful interpretation has been captured on record.

This new mastering enhances the excellent work of the Mercury sound engineers: enhanced presence and dynamism, as well as a more beautiful orchestral color, closer to the original vinyl recording.
