In 1942, the Telefunken company persuaded Wilhelm Furtwängler to experiment with improvements in recording technology. Having agreed, he chose the famous Adagio from the 7th symphony to test, as he himself stated, whether the microphones were capable of capturing the magnitude of his orchestra, particularly the renowned Berlin double basses. The results were simply astounding!

This interpretation of Bruckner by Furtwängler is of gripping tension despite its apparent slowness. Once again, the tragic element and the grandeur of the discourse are unrivaled. Furtwängler reins in his orchestra and releases it until reaching the climax: an explosion and a burst of light. It's truly a recording for a desert island, thankfully restored for the delight of music lovers.
