Chopin: 4 Scherzos & 4 Ballades

Arthur Rubinstein (2023-26 Remastered, New-York 1959)

1 disc(s) - 8 track(s)
Total length: 01:11:19

Arthur Rubinstein was 72 years old when he made this recording. In 1959, he was already an accomplished and internationally acclaimed musician. The death of Joseph Stalin two years earlier had allowed for a relative thaw in relations between East and West, enabling Rubinstein to return to his native Poland for the first time in twenty years.

This event sparked in him an outburst of enthusiasm and patriotism. He gave an extraordinary concert. The packed hall was ecstatic. The “Military” Polonaise set the audience ablaze; at the end of the concert, the pianist had to respond with encore after encore...

Back in the United States, he recorded the complete Ballades and Scherzos in just two days, April 28 and 29, 1959, in New York, in order to preserve something of that emotion of returning to his homeland. Rubinstein shapes the Ballades and Scherzos like stories: they possess their own dramaturgy and unshakable architecture; one can “tell” everything through music of such powerful narrative force.

A full concert grand piano (approximately 274 cm) produces a rich, rounded lower middle register and powerful bass. It is the indispensable choice of the world’s greatest pianists and of all those who demand the highest level of musical expression. The remastered edition restores this enveloping harmonic richness.
