This sumptuous interpretation reminds us that the primary instrument is the voice. The vocal quartet (bass, tenor, alto, soprano), when in perfect harmony, can indeed become the most beautiful, and the Saltire Singers deliver music in its noblest, purest form. It's a breathtaking recording from England that presents flawless vocal performances of the tenderest and most moving songs by John Dowland, taken from Books I to IV.

Both Patricia Clark (soprano) and Edger Fleet (tenor) have performed with the Deller Consort, and Desmond Dupre accompanied Alfred Deller for much of his career. Engineer Doug Pomeroy provides a warm and crystalline recording that allows every nuance of the exceptional acoustics of the chosen recording venue to envelop us with great gentleness. The remastering has helped to soften some harsh frequencies for the ear and bring even more richness and warmth to this marvel.
