Elgar composed his Cello Concerto at the end of World War I before descending into pessimism and silence. His work reflects a torn, raw sensitivity and deserves an interpretation that matches the emotional weight of the composer and the historical events he endured.

Jacqueline Du Pré belongs to that category of performers who have music burning within them. One doesn't need to be a music scholar or an infallible theorist if one does not possess, like this immense artist, the inner fire and the spontaneous and instinctive inspiration that produce definitive recordings. Full stop.
