During a long stay in Italy, Charles Gounod studied Palestrina’s style with great dedication, which inspired him to compose many works. The influence of sacred music was so profound on Gounod that he long considered entering the priesthood. It was also during this period (around 1850) that he began working on the St. Cecilia Mass, which he did not complete until five years later. This interval was marked by decisive events in his personal and artistic development: through his encounter with the fascinating Pauline Viardot (a French singer and composer of Spanish origin, and sister of La Malibran) and his discovery of Hector Berlioz’s music, the composer gained greater mastery and maturity.

Gounod continued to compose liturgical music until the end of his life. The St. Cecilia Mass thus holds a central place in Gounod’s artistic evolution.

The little-known recording by Jean-Claude Hartemann—often overshadowed by those of Prêtre and Markevitch—remains, in our view, the ultimate reference. It was in fact awarded a major recording prize. An epic breath animates this interpretation, further enhanced by a sumptuous sound capture. The choirs, orchestra, and vocal soloists are all remarkable. The remastering is exceptional.
