Maunder: Olivet to Calvary

In the spring of 33 C.E., Jesus Christ was executed. He had been falsely charged with sedition, savagely beaten, and nailed to the wood. He died in excruciating pain. But God raised him back to life, and 40 days later, Jesus ascended to heaven. Unlike fanciful legends, the Gospel writings reflect painstaking accuracy and attention to detail. For example, they abound with names of real places, many of which can be visited today. They tell about real people, whose existence has been corroborated by secular historians (Tacitus, Suetonius, Jewish historian Josephus, Pliny the Younger..).
John Henry Maunder was born in Chelsea in 1858 and studied at the Royal Academy of Music. He served as organist and choirmaster at several churches on the outskirts of London. Of his sacred music output, the work “Olivet to Calvary” seems to have passed into posterity. Published in 1904, Olivet to Calvary is described on its title page as “a sacred cantata, recalling some of the incidents in the last days of the Saviour’s life on earth.” Despite such criticism, Olivet to Calvary has experienced renewed interest in recent years.
The occasional saturation is due to the recording, not the remastering process. Nevertheless, the beauty of the choruses and the power of the organ are remarkably intelligible.
