La Bohème is undoubtedly the Puccini opera that feels the most spontaneous in its expression of emotion, and the most colorful in its contrasts—between brotherly camaraderie, intimacy, lively festival scenes, cheerfulness, and melancholy. The recording made by Thomas Schippers remains little known, yet both the vocal cast and the orchestral direction come remarkably close to an ideal that is hard to surpass.

Mirella Freni—just to speak of her—may well be the "Mimi" of the century. Best known for the version under Karajan alongside Pavarotti, this earlier recording predates it by ten years and already showcases a complete palette of expression, ranging from fragile romantic exaltation to the anguish that leads her inexorably down the cruel path of her fate.

The sound quality is sumptuous—these were, after all, the great years of Abbey Road Studios. We can only recommend this Bohème, one of the most stunning recordings ever devoted to this masterpiece. Thank you, Walter Legge.
