Scarlatti composed over 600 esercizi (sonatas) and other pieces for harpsichord; most are meticulously crafted—short, lively, and melodious works written in the forms of contemporary dances. He liberated harpsichord music from the polyphonic constraints of the Baroque era, employing extensively broken chords, arpeggios, and even tremolo effects. His inspiration appears to have drawn primarily from the Italian music of his time and from Spanish folk dances. Many of his small pieces have been arranged into concert suites for piano. In 1956, three previously unknown Scarlatti sonatas were even discovered at the British Museum, believed to have been composed during the composer’s stay at the court of Queen Maria Barbara of Spain.

Dubravka Tomšič is a pianist’s pianist—a name little known outside classical music circles, yet frequently cited among the world’s finest players. At the keyboard, her reserved demeanor belies the expressiveness of her playing. Celebrated for the rich variety of tonal colors she coaxes from the piano and for the power and delicacy of her trills, Tomsic delivers performances often described as “seamless.” Her “dazzling technique,” noted the Boston Phoenix after a concert that concluded only after five encores, “is never an end in itself, but a means to achieve emotional candor and poetic suggestion.”
