Saint-Saëns: Symphony No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 78 "Organ"

Paul Paray (2024 Remastered, Studio 1957)

Total length: 00:34:22

In 1886, Saint-Saëns wrote as a tribute to Liszt one of his most remarkable works for posterity, his Symphony No. 3, Op. 78. It involves the organ in the second movement and the Finale, and a four-hand piano in the last two movements, a combination never before assembled. It inaugurates the revival of French symphony.

Paul Paray's interpretation is among the great historical versions. Some might criticize the sound of the orchestra, which is not top-notch, but Paul Paray electrifies it, conveying such impressive energy and passion that these minor flaws fade far behind us. The great organist Marcel Dupré accompanies the orchestra with all the necessary discretion in the adagio and contributes to the grand blaze in the finale. This new mastering brings the deep breath and sonic beauty that was missing in the subsequent reissue.
