We are dealing with a true masterpiece where melodic themes rival in beauty with Schubert's most beautiful lieder.

Now performed by cellists, magnificent versions of this sonata have enriched the discography, and Daniil Safran's recording, accompanied on piano by Lydia Pecherskaya, stands among the great references. This pianist may not possess the exceptional creativity of Benjamin Britten, nor his intelligence in distributing sound planes, but her restrained and accurate playing surely aims to give all the space to her partner who is the true star: Daniil Shafran. Aristocratic, elegant, refined, his characteristic vibrato is absolutely exquisite.

The microphone, placed very close to the cellist, reinforces the intention to give Daniil Shafran the role of the sole protagonist. The presence of the cello is such that it is difficult to believe, if one closes their eyes, that we are not witnessing a private concert given to a small group of enthusiasts, as in Schubert's time.
