How could such a beautiful interpretation have fallen into oblivion? The epic dimension of Sibelius's orchestral works is here elevated by a conductor well-known for having accompanied Jacqueline du Pré in Delius's Cello Concerto.

The Vienna Philharmonic is irresistibly charming and beautiful, with a special mention for the wind instruments in The Swan of Tuonela, where the oboe accentuates this dreamy, questioning melody. En Saga Op. 9 is one of the finest interpretations in the entire discography. The heroic and melancholic duality of the work is highlighted through a first-rate architectural conception, supported by strings and brass of equal magnificence. Finlandia and the Karelia Suite burst with patriotism, while Pohjola’s Daughter is a sweeping fresco reminiscent of the adventures of the hero Kullervo. (The BBC Orchestra is in a state of grace.)

This sumptuous remastered edition restores depth and richness to these symphonic works, masterfully conducted by Sir Malcolm Sargent.
