The popularity of this spectacular work (1812 Overture) has never faded, and every conductor occasionally feels the urge to make their orchestra thunder forth in grand style. We highly recommend this absolute reference recording by Antal Doráti. It is an interpretation that is both musically and dramatically “superior.” Alongside the orchestra can be heard the sounds of an authentic French cannon from the Napoleonic era, as well as massive church bells, thus recreating the military atmosphere intended by the composer.

An ideal companion to the 1812 Overture, the Capriccio Italien is every bit as delightful. This composition for large orchestra was written during Tchaikovsky’s stay in Rome in January 1880. Writing from Rome, he declared: “I think it has a brilliant future. It will be highly effective because of the wonderful melodies I had the opportunity to collect, partly from published collections and partly directly from the streets with my own ears.” Once again, Antal Dorati is outstanding, remarkable for his contagious exuberance, striking dynamic contrasts, and flawless rhythmic precision.

Although old, these two recordings already benefited from exceptionally fine sound engineering, though they had aged somewhat over time. The remastering adds that final layer of varnish to the finely crafted woodwork created in Mercury’s engineering workshops. The stereo soundstage is impressive, the dynamics are even more natural and vivid (watch your speakers!!), and every detail of the score emerges with stunning clarity. A pure audiophile experience!
