EVGENY MRAVINSKY was born in 1903 in Saint Petersburg, the city of Tchaikovsky. The composer’s music seems, by this very fact, to be part of his culture and even his genetic makeup. The last three symphonies of Tchaikovsky, interpreted by Mravinsky, have been the absolute pinnacle of the discography for several decades. It is as if he were the perpetual guardian of the Tchaikovskian tradition. The theme of fate—this relentless force that prevents the fulfillment of happiness—resounds with a searing intensity, like an open wound that cannot heal.

In the 4th Symphony, the tension has never erupted with such violence as under the authority of the Russian conductor. In the 5th Symphony, Mravinsky combines razor-sharp attacks with rubato of infinite melancholy. In the 6th Symphony, the dramatic tension reaches its zenith. Crushing and visionary, Mravinsky grips us and drags us into an endless descent into the abyss, a one-way journey with no return.

The remastered edition is exceptional: it naturally enhances the orchestral depth and the resulting dramatic power.
